Audiograms for Podcast Promotion: Effective, Shareable Samples

The audiogram — “more involved than a GIF, less commitment than a video” — has become the vehicle du jour for podcast promotion on social media. In a guide for The Podcast Host, Lindsay Harris Friel explains how to combine images, audio and text into a shareable, attention-grabbing package.

“It’s a combination of visual art, a sound wave, an audio track, and, at best, transcription of the dialogue,” Friel writes. Audiograms are low-impact in that “the user doesn’t have to make a decision, click a link, or add an app.” A casual passerby (or scroller-by) absorbs a potent preview in moments.

Audiograms began as an “open-source gift of code” from WNYC in 2016. Now, any user can create them using programs like Headliner and Wavve. Friel shows how to get ‘gramming with useful tips and technical workarounds.


Yes We Can: The Making of Multitude's DIY Brooklyn Podcast Studio

When independent podcast collective and production company Multitude decided it was time for a studio, they went all-in on DIY. Greenpoint isn’t exactly full of spacious, affordable options, but an office with “a surprisingly large walk-in closet” made the perfect spot.

Multitude’s Eric Silver has put together a comprehensive guide to how the team “planned, built and paid for a podcast studio from scratch.” Soundproofing sheetrock and dealing with “a literal hole” in the ceiling weren’t their only creative solutions. Silver provides a budget breakdown complete with bartering tips.

“Through some carpentry know-how and savvy asks, it wasn’t as expensive as you might think,” Silver counsels. “We’ll share our build journey and maybe it will help you make your own space, or at least answer some looming sound treatment questions you might have.”


PROmoted Rotation: RadioPublic Launches Discovery Feature in Beta

According to an announcement from RadioPublic’s Matt MacDonald and Ma’ayan Plaut, “In the coming weeks, podcasters with RadioPublic PRO accounts will start to see their shows featured on all RadioPublic Basic accounts.”

Rolling out in beta, the feature displays a selection of PRO podcasts on show pages, episode pages, and the embed player. Each “PROmoted rotation” of shows is selected at random from those that have a logline, a “featured gateway episode,” and a listener testimonial.

To measure the feature’s efficacy, PRO users that have the Podsite add-on will be able to identify new listeners in Google Analytics. Soon, they’ll “also see data on the number of display impressions and click-through rate.”

  • Polished proper: Blubrry has just announced professional post-production services for new and existing podcasts. Pro-level subscribers must apply for limited spots: Just 15 ‘launch/relaunch’ podcasts and 50 ‘auto-pilot’ transfer podcasts will make the first cut.
