Bello Collective: The Fantastic Minds Behind MARVELS

In Bello Collective, Bob Raymonda shares conversations with veteran indie podcasters Paul Bae (The Black Tapes), Lauren Shippen (The Bright Sessions), and Mischa Stanton (ars PARADOXICA) about the making of MARVELS. The podcast adaptation, out this month, celebrates the 25th anniversary of the hit graphic novel.

The audio series was an enormous undertaking with a large voice cast, which was new territory for some of the podcast crew. Sound design alone was a kaleidoscope of moving pieces. Mischa Stanton reveals the system that helped “keep 130+ tracks straight the whole time,” including a majestic screenshot.

Raymonda’s thoughtful questions draw passionate answers across the board. Lauren Shippen expressed, “MARVELS stands on its own as a wonderful and unique work, but it also is drawing on some of the biggest moments on the fifty years of Marvel before it, so, needless to say, there was a lot to play with.”

The Podcast Host's Ultimate Guide to Editing

Matthew McLean of The Podcast Host is here to “help you navigate the choppy waters of podcast editing.” The Ultimate Guide covers a variety of approaches and tools to build a custom plan for any kind of project.

Best practices “will depend on your budget, time constraints, and whether or not you prefer to learn new skills, or to outsource the stuff you’ve no interest in doing yourself,” McLean explains. Some will want production plugins while others want to hire a producer.

The guide covers digital audio workstations, including a detailed comparison between Audacity and Audition, but also teaches how to make the most of a bare-minimum method. As always, section links curate helpful further reading.

A Denver Podcaster Supporting First-Generation Latinx Listeners

The Denver publication 303 Magazine profiles Denise Soler Cox, the creator of the award-winning film Being Enye and the podcast The Self-Ish Latina. Iliana Salcido spoke to Cox about her work, which NBC Latino has called “a voice for first-generation Latinos.”

The heart of Project Enye is to help the Latinx community “overcome shame and isolation of not feeling Latino enough.” It celebrates breaking belief systems to “create something totally new for ourselves based on mattering and a firm belief that we belong,” Cox says.

The Self-ish Latina podcast explores living for oneself as a woman amidst negative, gendered connotations around selfishness. The title is true to the larger mission. “We wanted to deal with it out in the open,” Cox tells Salcido. “It could be used as the start of a conversation.”

Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.

Here's what else is going on:

  • Living image: Tamar Avishai is the first-ever podcaster-in-residence at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Each episode of The Lonely Palette tells the story of one artwork from the powerful exhibition “Women Take the Floor.”
  • Mad empathy: Dr. Frank Mirabal of Albuquerque-based Mad Scientist Media tells KRQE that “educating the community is the root” of the company’s podcasts, which span “conversations about race and culture without being preachy.”
  • Brain waves: “Expandable audio journalism” is the focus of Michael Epstein’s fellowship project at the University of Missouri’s Reynolds Journalism Institute. “The idea is to leverage smart speakers […] to give news listeners the ability to dig deeper.”
  • Next steps: After a “pivotal couple of weeks” in radio, Podcave spoke with many ‘dislocated’ employees about the process of transitioning into podcasting. John Michael's post points out uncommon windows of opportunity in the field.
