Episode 79: Your Monday Mix

Monday Guest Feature: Digging Deeper into Podcast Website Accessibility

This Monday Wil Williams and Elena Fernández Collins are back with a follow-up feature on building, or improving, a podcast website. Accessibility is the main focus of this second lesson, with links to suggested resources and actionable, bullet-point checklists. “Always remember that not everyone interacts with things like websites the same way that you do,” Williams writes.

These two avid listeners and reviewers see a ton of podcast websites. They share what’s memorable — details that show you’ve gone the extra mile. “Remember that your choices for your website are what will enable people to discover your podcast, listen to and support your podcast, and talk about you to their friends!,” writes Fernández Collins.

“Think about how you want to widen that net, make your podcast and podcast-related things accessible, and keep creating.”

Expert Field Notes: Must-Haves for Branded Podcast Hosts

“A good host is more than a hired gun,” writes Dan Misener of Pacific Content. “They’re a true partner: someone who genuinely wants to work with your brand to deliver an amazing, world-class, audience-first show.” When setting out to produce a show with a marketing or engagement focus, choosing the right person to deliver your message is key.

Misener’s years of branded podcasting expertise have shown a “few key indicators” to look out for in a host. “Some are deal-breakers, others are teachable skills, and still others are ‘nice to haves’ depending on the project.” If a potential host is an expert in the subject matter but struggles to formulate follow-up questions, you’ll know what to work on.

Pods Up North: 20 Speakers Confirmed for Manchester Event

Pods Up North is a podcast conference coming to Manchester, England on November 23. The day “will include workshops, discussions, talks and networking opportunities for podcasters of all levels.” Over twenty speakers have been confirmed for the conference, which will take place during the second annual Manchester Podcast Festival month.

Manchester-based podcasters and audio experts Kate Cocker, Vic Turnbull and Ant McGinley have crafted the day to be an interactive experience. “We started Pods Up North to support and celebrate the incredible podcast talent coming out of the North,” they state. “Events like this have been ‘South-centric’ so far.”

Attendees will learn strategies like how to book guests, plus interview skills and technical advice. Matt Deegan, co-creator of The British Podcast Awards, is just one expert on deck to teach and advise. Live show performances include A Gay and a NonGay, the UK’s #1 LGBTQ+ podcast.

Happy Monday, readers, especially to those of you speaking at or attending this month’s Manchester Podcast Festival. Catch live performances from favorites like Science(ish) and Nobody Panic.

Cheers,
Team PM

Gratitude is a duty which ought to be paid, but which none have a right to expect.

Here's what else is going on:

  • Storied past: Tracy Santilli of the communications, PR, and branding agency Tierney is the host of 29 Stories, a podcast highlighting Philadelphia women in executive roles. Paige Gross of Technical.ly interviewed Santilli about the show’s message: A winding career path is no obstacle to success.
  • Focus group: PodcastOne’s Peter Morris recently presented research on podcast ‘super fans’ with Tom Webster of Edison Research. E.B. Moss at MediaVillage caught up with Morris about trends in listenership, the power of tailored advertising, and plans to tap into new podcasting voices.
  • Bravo, bravo: Brett Johnson, producer and co-host of The Successful Encore Career podcast, has been named the winner of the Disrupt Aging Award from AARP Ohio. The show, published by the non-profit Employment For Seniors, is a resource for adults 50+ to use during their job search.
  • Panic flashback: This winter, the branded podcast producers at Podcamp Media will be launching Lead Balloon, a podcast “about epic disasters in PR and marketing, told by the communications professionals who lived them.” Host Dusty Weis gives a whole new perspective to a bad day at work.
