Episode 587: Your Thursday Podthoughts

Podcast Tips & Live Audio Recording on Reddit

The award-winning podcast team from Magnificent Noise took to Reddit yesterday for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session. Five veterans including Eric Nuzum answered questions from the public about show development, navigating freelance audio careers, promo attribution, and more. It’s all searchable text.

As promised, each answer comes from “decades of podcast experience, thousands of episodes and millions of downloads worth of insight.” The team’s credentials are too many to list (e.g., NPR, Audible, Slate, ESPN, The New York Times, TED, Pineapple Street, WNYC), but their advice is in-tune with indie podcasters.

In other news: Reddit’s live audio feature now enables recording, playback, and interactive elements. Audio hosting privileges will stay limited to group moderators, a very wise choice for a massive network of anonymous forums. Lastly, your ‘redditor editor’ just realized that she’s been an almost-daily visitor for 13 years.

On Air Fest: What's On Virtually Feb. 25-26

From February 25-26, Williamsburg, Brooklyn will be packed with more podcasts than usual. On-Air Fest is returning to the Wythe Hotel after going all-virtual last year. The weekend event includes performances, live episode tapings, interview sessions and a special 20th anniversary celebration of Radiolab.

Programming will be a mix of in-person and virtual, with virtual sessions playing in a movie theater at the venue. The full schedule shows what’s available from afar, including live virtual tapings of Jane Goodall’s Hopecast, Sheroes Radio, The Best Advice Show, Talkhouse, and Keep It. Two-day virtual passes are $65.50.

The Ramsey Show: 1 Billion Downloads and Counting

Out of 2 million podcasts, only a handful have reached the 1 billion download mark. Last year, The Ramsey Show became the fourth ever to earn the title. For 29 years on the air, financial expert Dave Ramsey has helped dedicated listeners navigate money and life.

Each week, his impactful advice is trusted by millions and counting. “We’re teachers at the core,” said Brian Mayfield, Executive VP of Ramsey Network. “We’ve never seen anything grow the way the podcast world has grown, so we see tremendous opportunity there to continue to increase our audience.”

Since The Ramsey Show began 15 years ago, callers have paid off a calculated $500 million. Ready for practical answers to the questions that matter most? Listen and follow wherever you get your podcasts.

Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.

Here's what else is going on:

  • You’re invited: This afternoon and evening, PM is hosting free virtual happy hours for Valentine’s Day. Both “We Love Podcasters” mixers will be held by Podcast Parties, one at 3:00 pm ET and a second at 7:00. Pick a time and join creators all over the world for some good clean fun. Free RSVP.
  • Fresh fiction: The Black Audio Dramas Exist Challenge will accept submissions until Sunday, February 20. Pieces must involve Black creators and be under 15 minutes. The theme, Black Love, “can get as unconventionally creative as you’d like.” Selections will be published at the end of the month.
  • Power up: Next Wednesday, February 16, Podcast Audio Lab founder Marcus dePaula will lead “How to Get the Best Sound with the Tools You Already Have.” The webinar and Q&A from Podcasting, Seriously will cover equipment, techniques, and home recording solutions. Tickets are $33.50.
