Podcasting is 1.0, 2.0, Beyond, and In Between

What does it mean for podcasting to be in a “1.0” phase? For Nick Hilton, the controversy over Mark Cuban’s blanket assessment raises some interesting questions. Hilton, the co-founder of UK podcast company Podot, considers ‘progress’ across three groups: content creators, funding sources, and audiences.

A label of ‘1.0’ or ‘2.0’ will never fit a medium this complex, Hilton says. “It’s not a flat industry or chorus line; it doesn’t move in singular, high-kicking unison.” Funding sources may have grown the most, but they’ve also been slow to evolve — leading to Cuban’s vision of replacing audio consumption analytics entirely.

“We have to know when to hold our hands up and say that elements are still too rudimentary or, worse, haven’t yet solved problems that have been around for a decade,” Hilton writes. “And we need to know when to defend the leaps and bounds that have seen this pirate-industry become a billion pound behemoth.”

A Heartfelt Ending to 15 Years of Podcasting

After 15 years and 45 million downloads, the beloved British comedy podcast Answer Me This! has come to an end. What does a graceful bow look like? Co-host Helen Zaltzman recently offered thoughts to Caroline Crampton. The show’s other host, Olly Mann, answered beautifully on Twitter. Some excerpts:
