Episode 479: Your Monday Mix

Podcasting is 1.0, 2.0, Beyond, and In Between

What does it mean for podcasting to be in a “1.0” phase? For Nick Hilton, the controversy over Mark Cuban’s blanket assessment raises some interesting questions. Hilton, the co-founder of UK podcast company Podot, considers ‘progress’ across three groups: content creators, funding sources, and audiences.

A label of ‘1.0’ or ‘2.0’ will never fit a medium this complex, Hilton says. “It’s not a flat industry or chorus line; it doesn’t move in singular, high-kicking unison.” Funding sources may have grown the most, but they’ve also been slow to evolve — leading to Cuban’s vision of replacing audio consumption analytics entirely.

“We have to know when to hold our hands up and say that elements are still too rudimentary or, worse, haven’t yet solved problems that have been around for a decade,” Hilton writes. “And we need to know when to defend the leaps and bounds that have seen this pirate-industry become a billion pound behemoth.”

A Heartfelt Ending to 15 Years of Podcasting

After 15 years and 45 million downloads, the beloved British comedy podcast Answer Me This! has come to an end. What does a graceful bow look like? Co-host Helen Zaltzman recently offered thoughts to Caroline Crampton. The show’s other host, Olly Mann, answered beautifully on Twitter. Some excerpts:

“We could only include a *tiny* sample of the feedback we received since announcing the end of the show, but we read/listened to ALL OF IT. It was overwhelming. Listeners have taken us with them as they’ve made their way through school, marriages, careers & more.”

“Notably, some listeners evidently used our show to divert their headspace from anxiety, depression, bad health, etc. We never expected our show – which was only ever intended to be a light-hearted diversion from even lesser things – to do this. But we're so DELIGHTED that it did.”

Here's what else is going on:

  • Group chat: On Wednesday at 7:00 ET, Afros & Audio will host a Podcast Movement recap event on Instagram Live. Afros & Audio’s Talib Jasir and Latrice Sampson Richards led a panel session with Blake Johnson (The Black Podcast Club) and Africa Hannibal (Break Bred Studio).
  • Seeing stars: Yesterday was August’s official Podcast Review Day (it’s the 8th of each month) but it’s never too late to post a show review. In the words of founder Stephanie Fuccio: “This impact, this connection, this feedback, this is why many independent podcasters do what we do.”
  • Track practice: “How much does Spotify really know, and how can you limit its data collection?” asks Matt Burgess of Wired. There’s no such thing as privacy, but turn off that Facebook integration. Sounds Profitable editor Bryan Barletta helps explain the details Spotify gathers and why.
  • Zone out: Yet another startup “aims to be TikTok for podcasts.” Rob Litterst of The Hustle spoke with Paul English, the founder of Moonbeam.fm, about the podcast player and app that allows users to “swipe through clips and find new podcasts they otherwise wouldn’t come across.”
