‘Publisher-Supplied’ RSS Transcripts Gaining Ground

Triton Digital has enabled Omny Studio podcasters to distribute their own transcripts via RSS. Transcripts on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify are auto-generated by the platforms themselves, not the podcaster, meaning that important details like proper names are not reliably accurate.

Not all major podcast apps have agreed to use publisher-supplied transcripts, yet some have. The addition is made possible through the ‘transcript’ RSS tag, as proposed by the RSS Namespace Extension for Podcasting project. Wider adoption would increase creator control over an essential part of their content.

“We believe it makes more sense for publishers to supply the transcript of their podcasts to the listening platforms, rather than the other way around,” the Omny team says. The move is about more than efficiency: “If a publisher generates a transcript of an episode then that should become the source of truth.”

How to Self-Audit for Podcast Growth in 5 Steps

A professional podcast audit is one of the most reliable ways to improve your show, writes Stephanie Fuccio for The Podcast Host. “No matter how good your workflow or podcast is, you'll benefit from new eyes and ears checking it out.” If time or resources are in short supply, these actionable steps are a solid start.

Fuccio lists five questions for a ‘self-audit,’ all of which need a “yes” answer. (“If it's less than 5, then you've got work to do.”) Resource links explain the audience-building power of each step, from minimum bitrate to listener-support channels. Be prepared to dedicate significant research and patience to these pillars.

If a full consultation is realistic, Fuccio recommends specific contacts that may be able to help. Tracking progress (without obsessing over it) is a balance well worth the effort. “It's impossible to see our own creative projects objectively,” she points out. “It's true: ignorance is bliss. But awareness is momentum.”

Here's what else is going on:

  • Below deck: According to internal Spotify data from last fall, Gimlet was “commanding a much smaller share of consumption than Parcast or The Ringer.” Natalie Jarvey and Steven Perlberg’s Business Insider article is paywalled, but Jarvey provides eye-opening highlights on Twitter.
  • Title case: The first International Women’s Podcast Awards will take place in London one month from now. In-person (£46.00) and livestream (£10.00) tickets are available for the event on September 23, hosted by Vick Hope of BBC Radio 1. The ceremony begins at 7:45 pm BST/1:45 pm CT.
