The second round of the Google Podcasts “creator program accelerator” is officially underway in Boston. PRX’s Lindsay Abrams writes that in the PRX Podcast Garage, 9 podcast teams (6 selected for the program, plus 3 three runners-up) gathered from the U.S., India, Lebanon, Spain, Colombia and Brazil. They began with an “immersive introduction to human-centered design” and have branched out to sessions with major industry players.
Conversations about the sometimes-lonely business of podcasting are universal. Globally, these creators are “teaching people what podcasts are, and what they can be in the future” in addition to making their outstanding shows. In December, the teams will “work to create, test and refine everything about their shows.” We’ll be following their progress.
Patreon recently announced an integration with the professional video platform Vimeo. Pro and Premium users are now able to share secure video with patrons without leaving Patreon. Vimeo’s “gated and secure” integration ensures that “unreleased, raw, and new content,” unlike YouTube links, cannot be “shared or leaked elsewhere.”
Users upload videos directly on Patreon, with Vimeo security permissions pre-set. The idea is for patrons’ attention to stay focused on the content, including new offerings not yet available to the public. Video content can be distributed to specific tier levels, offering a new way to reward supporters.
Johnny Peterson, CEO and founder of Straight Up Podcasts, offers a thorough and varied look back at last week’s Podcast Movement. “As I sat in the jam-packed convention hall, I suddenly found myself in awe of how large this community really is,” he begins.
Highlights include this year’s focus on thinking of one’s podcast as part of “the show,” or a franchise. Between merchandise and exclusive bonus content, die-hard fans will appreciate extensions of your work outside audio.
Peterson explains how “promoting podcasts you care about is a win-win-win,” as suggested by Barstool Sports’ Deirdre Lester and Ad Results Media’s Marshall Williams. Whether you attended sessions nonstop or have been keeping tabs from afar, we recommend this takeaway.
Kate Erickson wrote a very special recap of PM, but not just of this year’s event. She’s attended all 6 years since 2014! Thanks, Kate, for the thoughtful coverage and consistent support.
Love,
Team PM
