Penn State journalism professor Jenna Spinelle conducted a special interview for this Wednesday’s guest article. Spinelle, the host and producer of the Democracy Works podcast, had the opportunity to chat with Christopher Goffard, the creator of podcast megahit Dirty John. Their conversation digs into his just-released show, Detective Trapp.
Goffard visited the Penn State campus to deliver a lecture,“10 Things I Learned From My First Podcast,” on November 13. “Making Dirty John pushed Goffard, a longtime print reporter, outside his comfort zone in the same way that writing his first book did,” Spinelle reports. “He embraced the challenge of doing something new and encouraged the students in the audience to do the same thing.”
This week it’s all about gratitude for the PM community. This week’s mini documentaries highlight some choice PM19 interviews from keynote speaker Patrice Washington and Spoke Media’s Keith Reynolds and Alia Tavakolian. We’re so glad they took some time out of their busy event schedules to share their experiences.
The new season of Podcast Movement Sessions, produced by Ted Woods and sponsored by Storyblocks, is on its way. The full official trailer comes out this Friday, and Season 4 will be released on November 29.
In other news, we’re celebrating the upcoming holidays with a sweet Cyber Monday deal on event registrations. Check yourself (or a friend) off your gift list early — ticket rates for both PM Evolutions and PM20 will stay as-is only until midnight on December 3.
At a remarkable pace, podcasts like My Dad Wrote A Porno and My Favorite Murder have expanded into wildly popular performances. In a piece for Pollstar, Deborah Speer digs into the logistics of cross-media adaptations.
Interviews include a discussion of studio-to-stage expansion with Tyler Bates, the general manager of Kings Theater in Brooklyn. Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson of Two Dope Queens filmed their live podcast show there, which, being for HBO, was a complex affair.
“If Pod Save America goes out, say in October or maybe during the primaries, if they hit the market just right they could go to the arenas,” Bates told Speer. “The format of conversation is at the dawn of where I think it’s going.”
Happy Wednesday, readers, and thank you to She Podcasts for sharing these insights from Melissa Kiesche, SVP of Edison Research.
In Kiesche’s own words, this is not just a collection of graphs. “It is data that can help frame our conversations and direct change.”
Cheers,
Team PM
