Folk on Foot: A Podcast of Beloved UK Musicians in Nature

On the music and nature podcast Folk on Foot, broadcaster and former BBC executive Matthew Bannister “goes walking with a leading folk musician in a landscape that has inspired them.” The show began slightly over a year ago and is now on its fourth season after taking home a medal at this year’s British Podcast Awards.

In a charming and wide-reaching interview, David Weir of Folk Radio UK speaks with Bannister about the magic of renowned folk musicians singing and playing songs outdoors. How was podcasting such a perfect fit for the project? “I didn’t have to wait for somebody to commission it or persuade somebody else,” says Bannister. “I just decided I’m going to put it out there and see if anybody comes.”

Here's what else is going on:

• Scanner darkly: The music and video search engine Pex has begun scanning podcasts for unauthorized, unlicensed music use, reports Podcast Business Journal. “Fingerprinting technology” will allow rights holders to identify “snippets as short as a half second in all podcasts uploaded to Apple Podcasts.”

• Fresh perspective: NPR has named Manoush Zomorodi to host the radio show podcast TED Radio Hour following the departure of Guy Raz, reports Tyler Falk for Current. Zomorodi is the creator of podcast Note to Self, “a WNYC Studios podcast about life in the digital age.” Episodes will air this spring.

• Thank goodness: The Onion has dominated satirical news for decades, and now “America’s finest news source” has inked a podcast deal with Sony Music Entertainment. Daily show The Topical, billed as an opportunity to “access and inform billions of presumably illiterate people,” will launch in January.

• Beyond tunes: Global users of the French streaming service Deezer can now access podcasts and radio shows “via a dedicated non-music content hub” on its iOS app. Custom channels on the new ‘Shows’ tab include “sub-categories and niche subjects” like self-help, parenthood, and kids’ programming.
