One of Spotify’s biggest exclusive podcasters is hitting the road. Joe Budden announced on his latest episode that by September 23, he and his show will no longer be exclusive to the platform. Ashley Carman of The Verge describes the comments as “an opportunity to scorch Spotify and detail his history with the company.”
Despite his success and following, Budden says, the company denied bonuses and Christmas Day vacation in a series of tight-fisted interactions. “That was the first time it dawned on me that Spotify is pillaging,” he says. “You’ve continued to pillage each step of the way without any regard for [the fans.]”
The company has since responded with a “considerable offer.” Budden turned it down. Carman describes his disillusionment: “He suggests that Spotify’s only interested in finding new popular shows rather than feeding the podcasting ‘ecosystem.’” Other popular podcasters, like creators of The Nod, share the sentiment.
For a compelling podcast, says Steve Robinson of Pacific Content, you’ll want to “include interesting voices in your show that really help to structure, deepen and propel your narrative.” How can you ensure your guests bring top-notch conversation? Robinson refers podcasters to the world of chase production.
“On paper, the role of a chase producer is pretty simple: locate guests and book them to appear on your show or program. In practice, it’s a bit more complicated,” Robinson says. “For starters, finding the appropriate voice isn’t always easy.” To find ideal guests, podcasters need to be asking the right questions.
Robinson says to be persistent, even on social media. “The key is to be resourceful in digging around for information and tracking people down.” It’s also important to remember that your podcast is an opportunity. Be confident: “Requesting an interview may feel like asking for a favour, but in fact it’s the other way around.”
Appearing as a podcast guest is proven effective for driving awareness and new sales. It builds your reputation, increases social media traffic, and creates more and better backlinks. How can you best expose your content to new audiences? How can you ensure long-term ROI?
