In an article for Forbes, Joshua Dudley calls attention to an urgent problem in mainstream podcasting: “Far too many people have to rely on third-party websites or make their own transcriptions to get the access that they need.”
Podcasts without readily available transcripts miss out on “a huge potential audience that is being shut out from participating” in the medium. Dudley explores solutions to this obstacle, focusing on the work of deaf or hard-of-hearing people who are creating podcasts.
Podcaster and voice actor Caroline Mincks and audio drama producer Cole Burkhardt describe their experiences working in the field. After speaking with Dudley, the two were connected and “will be producing [Mincks’] upcoming audio drama Seen and Not Heard.”
At Evolutions, Orit Cohen became the first speaker in Podcast Movement history to deliver a session entirely in Spanish. Cohen is the creator of the podcast Amigas in Business, about “inspiring stories of exceptional immigrant business owners.”
“It was very exciting being the pioneer for the next generation of Evolutions sessions in Spanish,” Cohen says, describing connecting with peers and the audience. “To my surprise, it was a very varied representation, from Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador and of course Mexico.”
Cohen’s session, “Como traducir mi passion en un podcast,” was celebrated by attendees from many backgrounds. “I know this session will be the first of many more to follow as our Latinx Community is in need of this valuable information,” she says. “The fact that we can get it in our language makes the very intimidating path of the podcaster be less daunting.”
Preceding PRX’s podcast privacy symposium this week, Blake Eskin of PRX briefed the community with suggested reading on the state of privacy in the industry. The conversation centers around encroachment on individuals by companies collecting marketing data.
Eskin explains why podcasting has largely avoided these explicit threats until recently, listing 15 pieces of writing and 2 podcast episodes to inform next steps. The medium is “reaching a crossroads” as monetization and business interests expand without precedent.
A central question: “What would a future for podcasting look like that is accessible to many producers, allows large and small organizations to build sustainable businesses, and is respectful of individual privacy?”
