The Tribeca Film Festival will launch a juried podcast category in 2021. According to Jill Goldsmith of Deadline, plans for Tribeca Podcasts include “world premieres and previews of upcoming podcasts, talks with renowned audio creators and live recordings in front of audiences during the festival.”
Podcast submissions will open for Official Selection on December 2 and close on January 29. Two juried awards will be granted, one for fiction and one for narrative nonfiction. Chosen nominees will be available on Tribeca’s website as well as “in-person listening stations at select venues,” if safety protocols allow.
It’s fitting that the new audio-storytelling vertical is timed with the festival’s 20th anniversary. Tribeca founders including Robert De Niro intended to revitalize the neighborhood after September 11, 2001. Forced to cancel in 2020 due to the pandemic, the event is returning June 9–20 to recognize a new group of artists.
From Spreaker, Jill Beytin’s guide to developing a “killer podcast script” doesn’t exaggerate. The discussion points are remarkably thorough, referencing sources like Transom, NPR, and The Writing Cooperative. Beytin is the founder and CEO of Bear Radio, Berlin’s English-language podcasting network and label.
“At the end of the day, all of the content you consume, including podcasts, has been scripted in one way or another,” Beytin writes. “The key is to make sure it matches the tone of your production, and more importantly, it sounds as natural as possible.” From script markups to cold-read editing, she explains how to pull that off.
Beytin breaks down three scripting approaches to fit different podcast styles. (If you have an interview show, you won’t be stuck reading a template for audio fiction.) Struggling with pronunciation or polish? Each trouble area comes with a detailed solution. But remember: “You don’t sound like Ira Glass, and that’s ok.”
