Last week, a sensitive 2012 interview with Rihanna surfaced as an episode of Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations. Unfortunately there was no indication of when it was recorded. According to Hot Pod’s Caroline Crampton, the “brief storm” that ensued “shows the importance of good context and metadata when repurposing content.”
Every podcaster should keep this lesson in mind. “Ideally, I think there would be some kind of acknowledgement in the audio itself that an episode isn’t recent,” Crampton says. “It doesn’t have to be a big announcement, but even the smallest indication can go a long way to preventing avoidable misunderstandings.”
A simple solution works for most shows, but some archival re-runs add value. Case in point: ‘Retro’ episodes of the long-running British comedy podcast Answer Me This!. Audience engagement is worth the effort, co-host Helen Zaltzman tells Crampton. “We’ve always wanted to feel like people are getting something extra.”
