Richard Whittaker of The Austin Chronicle reports on tonight’s Weird Stream-A-Thon, a special streamed fundraiser to help artists impacted by the cancellation of SXSW. As the event's host, Patreon is continuing support of creatives who earn income through its subscription platform.
The company has said that the free, three-hour streaming telethon will feature “conversations with artists and experts, performances, some fun surprises and a whole lotta community collaboration.” Whittaker writes that Patreon is supplementing its initial $10,000 donation with $1 per attendee.
Amanda McLoughlin, creator and CEO of the independent podcast collective Multitude, has been confirmed to deliver a set ― reason enough to tune in. “We're kind of making this up as we go,” Patreon said in the announcement, “but it's going to be weird for sure.”
This week’s recap updates PM event plans in the midst of Covid-19. Current possible outcomes include video recordings of all sessions, applying passes to future PM events, and, in the event of cancellation, full refunds for all registrations.
To be on the safe side, PM has organized a contingency registration plan. Until April 15, prospective attendees can put a $100 deposit down to lock in the current lowest price. If interested, email tickets@podcastmovement.com to participate.
Ida Schuster, the 101-year-old “grande dame of Scottish theatre,” is “almost certainly the world’s oldest podcaster, enthusiastically embracing the new technology to talk about her life and times.” In the Jewish Chronicle, Jenni Frazer profiles Schuster’s recent work.
There are “eight sparkling ten-minute episodes” of Old School so far, produced in Glasgow by The Big Light. Schuster is from Glasgow as well, born in 1918. “As someone who is often consulted on Scotland’s theatrical and film history, she jokes: ‘Ich bin ein archive,’” Frazer writes.
On Old School, Schuster shares stories about “acting, writing and directing, on stage, film and TV.” As described by The Big Light, the podcast “takes us on an incredible journey through her childhood, the war years, and her long career on stage and screen.”
