Episode 75: Your Newsday Tuesday

NPR's Firm Pre-Election Branding Message: ‘One' Multimedia

Current reports that “NPR will focus on promoting a single app for its content beginning next year with a new app powered by NPR One’s technology.” Users that have found NPR’s split programming confusing have been heard loud and clear.

“NPR now offers two apps: the audio-focused NPR One, which merges national and local newscasts, news segments and podcasts into a personalized stream; and the eponymous NPR app, which presents written news stories along with a live station stream and on-demand audio,” writes Tyler Falk.

“Elements of both apps will be merged into one using the NPR One technology that combines local and national content.” NPR’s VP of product hopes to launch the new app ‘around May as coverage of the presidential election ramps up.’

DC PodFest, This Weekend: Speakers, Sessions, and Resources for Local Creators

DC Podfest, “two days full of networking and workshops for podcasters,” returns to the city this Friday and Saturday. The American Institute Of Architects will be home to “a day of speakers, sessions, and workshops on topics ranging from the fundamentals of audio production to marketing and social media.”

Co-founder Jennifer Crawford launched the first DC PodFest in November of 2015 at the WeWork Wonder Bread Factory in Shaw, Northwest DC. “That venue served as the festival’s home for three years before a brief stint in Rosslyn last year,” writes Michael O’Connell for the Washington City Paper.

“Friday night we’re going to have a party,” Crawford told O’Connell. “This is critical. At least 50 percent if not more of the value of going to conference is meeting your community, forming those relationships that inspire collaboration, further learning and networking.”

Podcasting for Business: 6 Twin Cities Experts on Connective Branding

“What’s the purpose of podcasting for business?” asks Tess Allen of Twin Cities Business. “Every company and thought leader seems to be podcasting these days — but it isn’t about making money. Here’s why they’re doing it and how to succeed if you pick up the mic.”

“In an age where passion for the job is becoming as important as the paycheck, many businesspeople are turning to podcasts as ways to engage in conversations, build communities, and enrich both their own lives and the lives of others,” Allen writes. “Along the way, they’re also building their brand.”

Allen profiles the creators of 6 Minneapolis-area podcasting and audio professionals who are thriving in the field. Twila Dang, founder and CEO of Matriarch Digital Media, has especially sharp and empathetic advice on knowing when to ask for, and how to accept, help.

Happy Tuesday, readers. If you’ll be headed to Vancouver this weekend, be sure to say hi to Jenni, Brady, and Jen. Reaching out before an event is a surefire way to get the most out of a trip.

Cheers,

Team PM

Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It’s a way of understanding it.

Here's what else is going on:

  • Recycling energy: Amy Woods, creator of The Content 10x Podcast, has released a book. Content 10x: More Content, Less Time, Maximum Results is about “content repurposing — how to get the most value and return from the content that you create.” Available in paperback and digital.
  • Pristine sound: CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Vancouver will again sponsor the Vancouver Podcast Festival. Come for “interactive, skill-building programming for successful local podcasters,” masterclasses and more. Highlights include The Secret Life of Canada and The Allusionist.
  • Away team: Stitcher’s 10-part documentary podcast series Heaven’s Gate, hosted by Glynn Washington, will be adapted into a “four-part docuseries to be produced by CNN Originals.” The detailed TV account of the cult will be part of HBO Max’s first-ever CNN Originals slate.
  • Still watching: CNBC reports that Spotify CFO Barry McCarthy has been straightforward about audio’s value. In an interview following yesterday’s earnings report, McCarthy implied that ‘podcasts will be as critical to Spotify’s business as the streaming of original shows and movies are for Netflix.’
