Episode 103: Your Midweek Update

A Pulitzer Prize to Be Awarded for Audio Reporting

As reported by Mariel Soto Reyes for Business Insider, the Pulitzer Board has announced “a new experimental category for non-fiction storytelling in audio journalism.”

The new Audio Reporting category from Pulitzer “could incentivize a greater number of publishers and journalists to shift resources toward journalism […] with the medium in mind rather than start a discussion-based podcast or repurpose written work for audio distribution,” Reyes explains.

A podcasting Pulitzer prize is, in our opinion, a huge deal. However, “any resultant boom will likely be limited to the US.” Only American podcasts in the nonfiction reporting genre qualify for the award.

Understand to Overcome: Feeling Like a Podcasting Pretender

To the benefit of all, Wil Williams‘ recent article in Buzzsprout is about overcoming imposter syndrome in podcasting. After years as a podcast creator and journalist, they identify the medium as the “perfect storm” to foster insecurity in deserving, competent artists.

“What makes podcasting so susceptible to its creators feeling like they’re just faking their way through creation or success?” Williams asks. The article addresses the issue from multiple realistic angles.

Without sugar coating, they validate the many obstacles between picking up a mic and gaining confidence. However, “Here’s the secret about what a real podcaster is: a real podcaster is someone who has made a podcast.”
